From: Chicken Soup for the Woman's Soul

I read this and it resonated with me, so I thought I would share it.

Time is running out for my friend.

We are sitting at lunch when she casually mentions that she and her husband are thinking of "starting a family." What she means is that her biological clock has begun its countdown and she is considering the prospect of motherhood.

"We're taking a survey," she says, half jokingly. "Do you think I should have a baby?"

"It will change your life," I say carefully.

"I know," she says. "No more sleeping in on Saturdays, no more spontaneous vacations..."

But that is not what I mean at all.

I look at my friend, trying to decide what to tell her. I want her to know what she will never learn in childbirth classes. I want to tell her that the physical wounds of childbirth heal, but that becoming a mother will leave her with an emotional wound so raw that she will be forever vulnerable.

I consider warning her that she will never read a newspaper again without asking "What if that had been my child?" That every plane crash, every fire will haunt her. That when she sees pictures of starving children, she will look at the mothers and wonder if anything could be worse than watching your child die.

I look at her carefully manicured nails and stylish suit and think she should know that no matter how sophisticated she is, becoming a mother will immediately reduce her to the primitive level. That a slightly urgent call of "Mom!" will cause her to drop her best crystal without a moment's hesitation.

I feel I should warn her that no matter how many years she has invested in her career, she will be professionally derailed by motherhood. She might successfully arrange for child care, but one day she will be waiting to go into an important business meeting, and she will think about her baby's sweet smell. She will have to use every ounce of discipline to keep from running home, just to make sure he is all right.

I want my friend to know that everyday routine decisions will no longer be routine. That a visit to Mc Donald's and a five year old boy's desire to go to the men's room rather than the women's room will become a major dilemma. That right there, in the midst of clattering trays and screaming children, issues of independence and gender identity will be weighed against the prospect that danger may be lurking in the rest room.

I want her to know that however decisive she may be at the office, she will second-guess herself constantly as a mother. Looking at my attractive friend, I want to assure her that eventually she will shed the pounds of pregnancy, but will never feel the same about herself. That her life, now so important, will be of less value to her once she has a child. That she would give it up in a moment to save her offspring, but will also begin to hope for more years, not so much to accomplish her own dreams, but to watch her child accomplish his.

I want her to know that a cesarean scar or stretch marks will become badges of honor.

My friend's relationship with her husband will change, but not in the ways she thinks. I wish she could understand how much more you can love a man who is always careful to powder the baby or who never hesitates to play with his son. I think she should know that she will fall in love with her husband again for reasons she would never have imagined.

I wish my modern friend could sense the bond she will feel with other women throughout history who have tried desperately to stop war and prejudice and drunk driving.

I want to describe to my friend the exhilaration of seeing your son learn to hit a baseball. I want to capture for her the laugh of a baby who is touching the soft fur of a dog for the first time. I want her to taste the joy that is so real that it hurts.

My friend's quizzical look makes me realize that tears have formed in my eyes.

"You'll never regret it," I say finally.

Jack - Growing Up Too Quickly?

Jack is growing and changing everyday. His clothes are getting a little tighter each time we put a new outfit on, his body is becoming more and more solid each time I pick him up, and he's awake longer and more alert each new day. It's making me worried this will go by too quickly.

If someone would have told me I would feel, in even the slightest sense, worried that at 3 weeks old Jack is MUCH too close to 18 and off to college I would have questioned many things about that person's sanity and thought process :) However here I am (and Kady as well) and that's the feeling we have. I think it is a good example to all future parents out there of the special love you develop for your child.

Enjoy the video of Jack at 3 weeks 2 days.

Now I Understand

Now I understand why women "nest" before a baby is born. It's because once the little one arrives - the new mom is too tired/preoccupied/apathetic to care about scrubbing the bathroom floors. I guess I can only speak for myself...but seriously, my poor house was in dire need of some TLC. Luckily, I found some time to clean up today. And I apologize to anyone who has had to endure my messy home in the last 3 weeks.

On a different note - I discovered that peanuts do not agree with Jack's belly. For some reason over the last week I have been craving Trail Mix (by the handfuls). For the past two days little Jack has been so cranky and I know it is due to uncomfortable gas in his belly. I cut nuts out of my diet and he is a different baby today!

Last night I prepared a bottle for Tyson to feed Jack at his 5am feeding. It was a good thought, but I'm such a light sleeper that I wasn't able to sleep through the feeding. Next time I will have to sleep in the guest room. When I woke up this morning - I realized that my body was not happy that I skipped the feeding. No joke - I could have fed triplets.

Realizations

I have realized that the day can fly by and not much can get accomplished - when you have a baby. I have a baby that has discovered the comfort of being held and snuggled. This makes things like - oh, showering and going to the bathroom - nearly impossible. If I can do a load of laundry AND take a shower - I feel like it was a successful day.

By the way - I should mention that before Jack was born I heard things like, "That kid has more clothes than he'll ever wear." (this came from the Grandpas mostly) Well, I want people to know that Jack has worn nearly every newborn outfit he owns and some - :gasp: - more than once!

Today I spent some time taking advantage of Jack being wide awake...and took some much needed pictures of my little guy. He was very cooperative and actually seemed to enjoy it. The Grandma's are always asking for more pictures. Honestly, I don't think they could ever have enough! I also want to get Birth Announcements done...at some point, you know...in my "free" time.

Hello, Big World. I'm Jack.

Tipping the Bottle

I gave Jack a bottle today - mainly just to see if he would eat from it. Success. He liked it so much he took matters into his own hands - literally. What a smart boy!

"All done mom! Let's do this again in a couple hours!"

Shot of Jack

This little piggy weighs 7lb 4oz! Yes, that is 1lb 1oz more than he weighed less than 3 weeks ago when he was born. Breastmilk - it does the body good!

Dr. Roumayah

Poor Jack has a blocked tear duct - which has made his eye teary and crusty. I also heard him wheezing a bit last night, which of course, made me nervous. The Pediatrician's office opened at 8:30am and I was making an appointment by 8:31am. (Yes, I am THAT mom) Nancy came with me. She was hoping Virginia Slim would be there, but she wasn't.

We saw our favorite doctor - Dr. Roumayah. She is from Iraq and, as I've said before, she has a no-nonsense attitude that we love. Nancy saw this first hand today. Dr. R massaged Jack's tear duct area and told me to do the same at home. "Did you see how I did that?" she asked me. "Yes," I told her. "Let me show you," she said and she poked her finger into my eye area, "massaging" it. That was one painful "massage!" The fact that she has fingernails didn't help. Damn, woman.

The good news is - a blocked duct is very common and should get better in a couple weeks. Jack's lungs and heart sounded great and his oxygen level was 100%. He's a healthy boy!

Shot of Jack

Proof he isn't ALWAYS perfect. He was having a "Mad Jack Attack" in this picture - not happy that I woke him up to go in his carseat.

Trip to Target

Today Jack took his first trip to Target - aka: His Grandma Nancy's favorite store! He was such a good baby! He slept the entire time, barely making a peep. I was able to buy some new jeans - affectionately called my "fat" jeans. Apparently, my hips got wider during pregnancy. I guess it makes sense. So - I am allowing myself to wear these pants for a while - until I can get my butt back in shape.

Jack received his first official piece of mail today. His Social Security card arrived. I also picked up his birth certificate yesterday, so he is all set!

It has been great having Nancy here for the past couple days. She has been very helpful - keeping up with Jack's laundry (he goes through A LOT) and she even brought me breakfast in bed today (while Jack was having his breakfast in bed). We will miss her when she heads back to Fort Wayne tomorrow!

Shot of Jack

Jack was NOT happy with his Momma in this picture. He was hungry and almost completely naked. I'm sure he was thinking: "Thank God for my Wubbanub and warm blanket." No worries...a few minutes later he was changed, dressed, fed, and back asleep. What a perfect baby!

Painting Pottery

Brooke sent me a text this morning to see if we would be interested in painting some pottery with them today. Grandma Nancy watched both Molly and Jack in the studio - as Brooke and I tapped into our inner Picasso. Poor Jack had to get almost naked in order to put his footprint on his frame. He wasn't happy about it. Our work will be ready in a week, so we will be sure to post a picture of the finished product.

GO COLTS!

Jack enjoyed the Colts game with us today. He doesn't own any Colts gear...yet - but he has a little blue "colt" that he received from his Jewish Aunt & Uncle (Jeff & Jaime). We are SO pumped for the Super Bowl! I'm even considering having a Super Bowl party. Am I insane?!? Yes. But - as long as guests understand that there will be dust bunnies in the corner and perhaps some "time-outs" for feeding Jack...I think I can pull it off. Plus, Momma needs an excuse to break open that 45 North Reisling I've been saving for over a year!

Shot of Jack

Jack fell asleep in his Daddy's arms and decided to rest his hand on Tyson's lower lip. Maybe Tyson will listen to me now - when I say, "Shut your mouth!" (what? I would never...)

Two Weeks Old

My little man is two weeks old today! We can see him growing more each day. He is also becoming more alert. I notice him looking around more and being more reactive to noises/voices.

My mom has been here since Wednesday and we have really enjoyed having her around. She has made some great food and been a HUGE help to me during the day. I have even caught up on some much needed sleep. She leaves in the morning, but I'm sure we will see her again SOON...maybe she will bring Grandpa Yed with her next time?!?! Nancy is coming on Sunday night and we are looking forward to having her here. There will surely be more trips to the mall and Target...

Jack - enjoying his Wubbanub. I love his little monkey outfit!

Shots of Jack

I love my little man.

Happy Due Date

Today would have been Jack's Due Date. Of course, we are happy he joined us early! Tonight he enjoyed an IU victory in the basement with his Daddy. He wore his lucky IU blanket for the occasion. Go Hoosiers!

Shots of Jack

Jack has enjoyed some cuddle time with his Grandma Shirlee tonight. We also braved the mall again today - he DID NOT sleep this time. As a matter of fact, we spent the majority of our time in the bathroom...feeding and changing diapers. Sorry Grandpa...Grandma still managed to shop!

Things that Amaze Me

Over the past week and a half I have been amazed by so many things. I thought I would share some of them...

1. My body. First of all, I was amazed at how my body performed during childbirth. It is unbelievable that a woman's body is created so perfectly that it can carry out such feat. On top of that - I expected the recovery to be difficult. I was wrong. After just a few days, I felt like my old self. My pre-pregnancy self. No hip pain, heartburn, or lower backaches. I'm HEALED! And while I still have weight to lose - my body looks like MY body again. It's amazing. A true miracle.

2. My husband. I love him in a completely new way. Not that I didn't love him before, because I did (of course)...but seeing him as my coach through labor, seeing his tears when our son was born, and now seeing him as a daddy - my love for him has grown deeper and stronger. Today was his first day back at work and while I missed having him around the house - I know he missed being here even more.

3. My son. I have never known love like the love I have for Jack. There really are no words to describe a mother's love for her child. I had heard this so many times when I was pregnant, but it didn't hit me until I held my baby boy in my arms. I would do absolutely anything for him. It is an unbelievable feeling - so deep and true - it almost hurts. I feel so blessed to be his Mommy.

I'm sure there will be many more New Mom Moments that amaze me... I can already see him changing and I fear he will grow up too fast. But - I vow to enjoy every moment I have with him.

Crafty Kas

Today Jack received a gift from Kassey, Nick, and his soon-to-be buddy - Oliver! Kas is so crafty! Remember when I referred to my 4-H friends that can sew? Yeah, she is one of them! She sent him the cutest hoodie and baseball shirt - complete with the same number his Daddy wore at DePauw. LOVE it! I can't wait for him to wear it!!

Shot of Jack

I took this picture last night after Jack's bath. I thought it would be a good idea to let him "air out" - diaper-free for just a few minutes. Mistake! Two minutes after this picture was taken, he pooped on me. Lesson learned.

Pillow Talk

Okay, not what you may be thinking... Tyson and I always sleep with a lot of extra pillows. I needed them when I was pregnant, in order to get comfortable. Now I use them to prop myself up when I am feeding Jack. Well, lately these pillows have caused some unnecessary concern for us as we sleep.

On Friday night I had my alarm set for 3:30am (to feed). Tyson woke me up at 3:15 and said, "I'm SO tired. Can you just take him?" I was confused. I'm a really light sleeper, so I didn't know how I could have slept through him crying. I sat up in bed, Jack was sound asleep. As I was getting myself situated Tyson rolled over and tried to hand me a pillow. Apparently he dreamed he was holding Jack and needed a break. I made fun of him the next day...

Then I did the same thing last night! I had a pillow tucked under my arm and must have thought it was Jack. Tyson rolled over onto the pillow I was holding and I panicked. "Hunny, get off him!" I yelled. Tyson was confused and for good reason. I turned over to see Jack sound asleep in his bassinet. I felt a sense of relief as I fell back asleep.

Sleep deprivation is leading to hallucinations. :)

Ped Update

It was a mad rush to get out the door and to our pediatrician appointment on time today. Somehow all three of us fell back asleep after Jack's 7:30am feeding. Our appointment was at 9:45 and Tyson woke me up at 9:20. Needless to say, I didn't look good walking out the door.

It must have been pretty bad, because the doctor suggested we have one night a week when Tyson gives Jack a bottle so I can get 8hrs of sleep. Actually - that sounds like a great idea! We will recruit the Grandmas for this task in the next two weeks.

GREAT NEWS: Jack now weighs 6lbs 6oz!!! He has gained almost 2oz a day. WooHoo! Babies should gain about .5-1 ounce a day - so once again, Jack is being an over-achiever. I have also given myself a pat on the back. Breastfeeding is a demanding job, but when my baby gains weight - it's worth it!

His color is also back to "normal." So the doctor felt his jaundice was going down. She didn't have Virginia do a blood test - and I was happy about that!

We will go back for his 1 month check-up on February 11th!

Shot of Jack

He has his Senior pose ready. Notice his fuller cheeks. We are hoping he is at least back up to his birth weight tomorrow (follow-up appt. at pediatrician). He eats like a CHAMP - the kid doesn't miss a meal - so we know he'll start packing on the ounces, or even better POUNDS!

Happy Birthday to Me.

Today is my 28th birthday and I'm pretty sure my gift arrived a little early. How could I want for anything else - when I have a perfect, healthy, adorable Baby Boy to love? I guess diapers would be a close second...and the IU win was definitely an added bonus...but nothing beats a cuddly 6lb baby nestled in my arms.
With my cake and my perfect gift. That is one HAPPY momma!
My mother-in-law had a cake made for me too! Yummmm. (Thank you, Nancy!)
Nothing beats some quality family cuddle time on the couch.

Mall Rat

We have been getting a little stir-crazy at home, so this weekend was the prefect chance to take Jack out into public. We decided to brave Somerset Mall. He must have his Grandma Nancy's shopping genes - because he slept the ENTIRE time we were out. Didn't want to interrupt the quest for a good deal. What a trooper.
I swear - there is a Jack in the carseat. He's just a little guy.

Meeting Aunts & Uncles

This weekend Jack met his Uncle Joe, Aunt Gina, Uncle Jon, and Aunt Karley. He was on his best behavior and gave them plenty of diapers to change. Everyone enjoyed passing him around and of course, showering him with love and attention. What a very lucky little boy!Uncle Joe braves a poopy diaper.
Lots of love from Uncle Jon and Aunt Karley.
Spending Saturday morning with Aunt Gina and Uncle Joe. He'll meet his pup-cousin, Hanky, soon.

Jack's Weekend

Here is Jack right after a bath ready for the weekend. His Aunts and Uncles are coming up to visit this weekend and he couldn't be more excited (can't you tell by his smile :)). We will post some pictures from the weekend on Sunday night. Stay tuned.

Shots of Jack

He LOVES his gift from the hospital!
"My Great Aunt Kim was right, I wanted to come out early to watch TV with my Dad."
Jack and Molly - We couldn't get over how tiny he looks next to her! She is 5 weeks older than him, but about 4lb bigger. He'll catch up soon.

Matrix Style Diaper Changes

For those of you who have seen the movie - The Matrix - you will understand how our diaper changes can be. Little boys have this special "gift" of being able to pee straight out. New parents must develop their reflexes and Matrix-esque moves in order to avoid being peed on. I have been Jack's target twice today (and once yesterday). The cold air seems to give him the urge to go and I guess in my sleep-deprived state, my reflexes are not up to par.

Shots of Jack

...a BIG thank you to Brooke for being our photographer today! We love capturing these first few days with Jack.

Follow-Up Appt

We had a follow-up doctor's appointment this morning with a new pediatrician - and luckily, Virginia was not there today. The doctor we saw was great! She is an older lady from Baghdad and Tyson loved her no-non-sense way of handling things. She asked about my milk production and then grabbed both of my boobs - just to see for herself. She seemed pleased. I, surprisingly, didn't mind at all. It's amazing how much of your modesty goes out the window after giving birth.

Jack started crying while she was talking to us about jaundice. She asked if he might be hungry and Ty & I thought he probably was. That was it. I was instructed to sit and nurse. Done.

Jack is eating like a champ and I feel a real sense of pride. He gained two ounces since yesterday and is back up to 5lb 13oz. They did another blood draw (and this time I liked the nurse). His jaundice level yesterday was 14 and it was 14.6 today - which means it isn't increasing rapidly enough for them to be concerned. We will continue to feed him A LOT and let him catch some rays (when they are available). We go back on Monday for another follow-up.

Wide Awake

Jack was WIDE awake after a nice big meal. Of course, as doting new parents, we think he's pretty darn cute.
GQ pose
Big yawn
This is his "poo face"

Shot of Jack

Catching some Jaundice-reducing rays of sunshine.

Visiting the Pediatrician

We went for our 48hr post-discharge pediatrician visit. Jack now weighs 5lb 11oz and is still 18 inches. It is normal for newborns to lose weight, but we will be working hard to get it back up in the next week or so. The doctor was also concerned about his jaundice levels, so she requested a blood test.

The nurse that took Jack's blood was an older lady who smelled like cigarettes. We affectionately refer to her as "Virginia Slim." Virginia became my least favorite person when she pricked Jack's heel with a needle and then squeezed out - what seemed like - a tablespoon of blood. He screamed bloody murder and my heart broke for him. Post pregnancy hormones are strong and Virginia was lucky I didn't smack her for hurting my precious baby boy.

We got a call this afternoon that Jack's jaundice levels were high and we need to take him back in the morning. If this means another heel prick - I might lose it. Watch out, Virginia!

My First Bath

Shot of Jack

After his bath. Swaddled, warm, ready to sleep!

First 24 hours at home

We have been home for ONE day. Last night was not bad at all. Jack was fed at 2:00am, 5:30am, and 9am. I am now in some SERIOUS pain as my milk comes in. Whoa. Men will not understand - but Moms will. I'm dying. Tyson was just sent to the grocery store and should be home with cabbage leaves any minute. I hear they help, I HOPE they help.

Jack received his first bath tonight. He should have a video up shortly. He's been working on it for the past 15 minutes and I told him I would upload it soon.

We have noticed how much our world has changed. When I was pregnant, the grandparents would call and ask how I was doing. Now, they call and only ask about Jack. They want pictures, updates (play-by-play is fine too)...they are IN LOVE with this little guy. But, who could blame them? We think he's pretty great too!

Home Sweet Home

Yes - it is our first day home and we look tired. But it felt so great to have "family nap time" on the couch this afternoon. The dogs were eager to show Jack how great all of us are at crashing on the couch. Jack napped in his Moses basket.
Look who wants a Boppy pillow of his own! The dogs were both great when they met Jack today. Surprisingly, Cooper has shown more interest in Jack -so far. He loves smelling him and joined Tyson and me as we completed our first diaper change in the nursery. Coop observed from the hallway, but didn't seem too stressed by Jack's screaming. Tucker, so far, just seems scared of Jack, but I know he will come around.
I had to get a close up of Jack's wrinkly hand. He has a pretty strong grip, too! Perfect for baseball, tennis, or golf.

Meeting Subba

Subba - one of our Kelley friends, stopped by tonight to meet Jack. Subba is moving from Detroit to Charlotte, NC tomorrow morning. Jack made his entry into the world just in time to say "See you soon!" Subba gave him a super soft IU robe! It is PERFECT.

(PS: Doesn't "Dad" look a bit tired?!?)

Shot of Jack

Like his parents, Jack was more than ready to leave the hospital today. He was cozy in his carseat and barely made a peep.

Ready to Leave

We will be leaving the hospital in the next 15 minutes. Jack was checked by the pediatrician and given the thumbs up. He has a little jaundice but nothing abnormal. He just needs to get out into this lovely Detroit weather and will be fine in no time :). Kady was cleared for release as well, she is still experiencing light numbing in her right thigh from the epidural but all doctors have seen this before and while not normal believe she will be 100% fine in a few weeks.

We would like to thank everyone for all the support, especially the 4 new grandparents who went through most of the experience with us. So thankful they were up with us.
